Sparks Group has partnered with a local government organization in Alexandria, VA to identify a Solid Waste Inspector for a temporary opportunity. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys a combination of fieldwork, customer service, investigation, and administrative responsibilities.
The Solid Waste Inspector will spend approximately 60% of their time in the field and 40% in the office, although the schedule may vary from week to week. In the field, this individual will respond to residential and commercial service requests, investigate solid waste and sanitation concerns, document findings, and help ensure issues are addressed appropriately.

Responsibilities:
  • Respond to residential and commercial solid waste, recycling, and sanitation service requests and complaints.
  • Conduct field visits to homes, businesses, streets, alleys, and surrounding properties to investigate reported concerns.
  • Inspect properties and service areas to identify issues such as improperly placed materials, containers left out beyond collection days, improper disposal, or other solid waste violations.
  • Assist residents and businesses with questions and concerns related to trash, recycling, collection services, and applicable requirements.
  • Evaluate requests for Walk Out Services by visiting properties and determining whether the customer meets the needs for the service.
  • Conduct follow-up visits to determine whether previously identified issues have been resolved.
  • Accurately document inspection findings, service requests, observations, violations, and follow-up actions.
  • Use electronic service-request systems to monitor, investigate, update, and close assigned tickets.
  • Communicate tactfully and professionally with residents, businesses, contractors, and internal staff.
  • Provide information regarding solid waste, recycling, refuse collection, and disposal procedures.
  • Identify situations requiring additional assistance and escalate specialized, hazardous, or elevated matters to the appropriate team members.
  • Assist with solid waste service-related administrative tasks, including tracking and coordinating requests.
  • Assist with trash-can inventory, placement, ordering, and distribution as needed.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation related to field activities.

Qualifications/Background Profile:
  • Valid Drivers License and Clean driving record 
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 2+ years of experience in inspection, sanitation, solid waste, code compliance, customer service, municipal services, or a related field.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean/acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to operate a company vehicle safely and responsibly.
  • Knowledge of solid waste, recycling, sanitation, refuse collection, or related municipal services.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact professionally and diplomatically with residents, businesses, and internal staff.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately document field observations.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and follow established procedures.
